Year 9 to Year 10 Subject Selection in UAE Schools 2026 — IGCSE Options Guide for Parents
The Year 9 to Year 10 IGCSE subject selection is the first major academic decision most UAE families make for their child. It shapes A-Level options, university pathways, and ultimately career trajectories. Most UAE schools run the subject choice process in March to May of Year 9, giving families 4 to 8 weeks to decide. This guide explains how many subjects to take, which combinations open which pathways, and the mistakes that close options unnecessarily.

The Three Most Common UAE Subject Selection Mistakes
1. Choosing Combined Science Instead of Separate Sciences
UAE schools typically offer two science options: Combined Science (Dual Award — equivalent to two IGCSEs) and separate Biology, Chemistry, and Physics (three individual IGCSEs). Students targeting Medicine, Veterinary Science, or competitive Engineering should almost always take separate sciences. Most UK medical schools explicitly state a preference for triple separate sciences at IGCSE level.
2. Choosing Core Maths Instead of Extended
IGCSE Maths comes in two tiers: Core (allows grades C to G only) and Extended (allows grades A* to E). Any student who might want to take A-Level Maths or A-Level Sciences should choose Extended Maths. Core Maths does not allow grade A, which is typically required for A-Level Maths entry. Most UAE schools encourage Extended as the default.
3. Choosing "Easy" Subjects Over Relevant Ones
Students sometimes choose subjects they think will produce higher grades at the expense of subjects they actually need for their intended A-Level pathway. A student who wants to take A-Level Chemistry but chose not to take IGCSE Chemistry will often find that their school requires IGCSE Chemistry as a prerequisite — or that Year 12 Chemistry moves faster than they can follow without the IGCSE foundation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How many IGCSEs should my child take in UAE?
Typically 8–11, with 3–4 compulsory and 4–6 optional. Most UAE schools target 9–10. Fewer subjects with stronger grades is better than more subjects with weaker grades.
Q: Which IGCSE subjects should my child take for Medicine?
Maths Extended, Biology, Chemistry, Physics (separate sciences), English Language, and one humanities subject. Separate sciences are strongly preferred over Combined Science by UK medical schools.
Q: Is it better to take more IGCSEs or fewer with higher grades?
Fewer with higher grades. A student with A* in 7 out of 8 IGCSEs is a stronger university candidate than one with 11 IGCSEs and a mixed grade profile.
Q: Can my child change IGCSE subjects after Year 10 starts?
Very difficult. Most UAE schools allow swaps only in the first 2–4 weeks of Year 10. After October, subject changes are almost never permitted.
Q: Does IGCSE subject selection affect A-Level options?
Yes significantly. Most UAE schools require grade C in the corresponding IGCSE before permitting A-Level entry in that subject.
